“You can’t go wrong when you love others. When you add up everything in the law code, the sum total is love.” [Romans 13:10 The Message]
As I read this verse quite a few songs started playing in my mind. The first one that popped into my thoughts was this one, “Oh-oh, what’s love got to do with it, got to do with it? And the next song to play in my thought was this, “What the world needs now is love, sweet love. It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of.” And then this one, “I’d like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony… I’d like to build the world a home and furnish it with love.” Imagine if every nook and cranny of this world was furnished with love. What a beautiful world it would be. Yes, when you add everything in the law code – love God, love neighbor – the sum total is love. “You can’t go wrong when you love others,” but as Tina Turner sings, “Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken?” Loving others will break our heart at some point along life’s journey, maybe that is why we withhold love or dish it out sparingly. Maybe heart ache is why humans struggle to love each other as God loves us. I suggest heart ache is worth it, as love tore open the heavens and came down to show us the truest way to be most fully human. You can’t go wrong when you love others, my friends.
Prayer
God of all love, your generous love called creation into being. Yet, I admit I am stingy with love. I love those who love me and struggle to love those not think of me. Forgive me and help me to risk loving others as generously as you love me. Amen.
