Look Up!

“When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back.” [Mark 16:4]

The glory of Easter awaits, but we are soon to be in the roller coaster of emotions of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the deafening silence of Saturday. This is the reality of the women in the Gospel of Mark who dared to get up early so they might anoint the corpse of Jesus with oil and spices. Joseph of Arimathea has placed Jesus’ linen wrapped body in a tomb that had been hewn out of rock. As the women approached with their heads bowed with grief, they knew that a stone stood between them and their purpose. Yet, to their surprise, when they looked up, they saw that the stone had already been rolled away. When have you been surprised when you finally looked up? How often do we get so caught up in what we are doing that we miss what is obviously in front of us?  As we finish this Holy Week and await the glory of Easter morn, may we remember to look up. Look up and see what God is already doing in our midst. Look up and notice God’s love being poured out in the simplest of ways by others. Look up and trust that God is with us, here, now, and always. Death is not the end of our story.

Prayer

Holy One, this week is a tough week. I would love to skip from the celebrations of Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, yet that would deny the reality of the world in which we live. Those in between days are all too real. So, give me the courage to look up and see you at work in them. Help me to be a beacon of your light and love every day of the week. Amen.
